Why OpenPhone’s Smart Rebrand to Quo Helped Secure an Impressive $105M

San Francisco-based communications startup OpenPhone has officially rebranded as Quo after securing a massive $105 million in growth financing, marking a bold new chapter in its mission to help businesses “never lose a customer again.”

The fresh round was led by General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund, with participation from Craft Ventures, Slow Ventures, Garage Capital, and Y Combinator. With this cash injection, Quo plans to ramp up product development, go-to-market expansion, and enhancements to its AI-powered voice agent, Sona.

Why the Rebrand Matters

Launched in 2018 by co-founders Mahyar Raissi and Daryna Kulya, OpenPhone started with a straightforward idea: modernising business phone systems. But as the product evolved, the name began to feel limiting.

“With Quo as our name, we can finally tell the full story. Think of Quo as your business’s customer hub, with phone at the centre,” Kulya explained.

The shift signals a bigger ambition; Quo is positioning itself as a customer-relationship operating system, going beyond simple calling into the broader world of AI-powered customer engagement.

Product Evolution: AI at the Core

At the heart of this transformation is Sona, Quo’s upgraded AI voice agent. Now offered on a tiered, usage-based model (with ten free calls per month), Sona can:

  • Handle more complex conversations,

  • Be trained for custom workflows, and

  • Seamlessly transfer calls to human agents when needed.

This makes Quo a direct competitor to established players like Aircall and Dialpad, while carving out its own niche by doubling down on AI-first customer support.

Funding Context: A Late-Stage Signal

The $105M raise stands out as one of the largest late-stage SaaS deals of 2025. It shows that investor appetite remains strong for companies with sticky revenue streams and clear product-market fit — even amid tighter global funding conditions.

For African SaaS founders in particular, this serves as a playbook:

  • Brand Beyond the Product → A scalable name matters as much as the product.

  • AI as a Differentiator → Embedding AI into workflows creates stickier, higher-value customer relationships.

  • Global Capital is Watching → Investors are still backing companies that own a critical piece of the business workflow stack.

Quo’s next big challenge will be balancing global expansion with product simplicity, the very simplicity that made OpenPhone a YC success story. If it succeeds, Quo could not only redefine how SMBs worldwide engage with customers but also set the standard for how AI transforms customer loyalty.
